During his recent visit to Kenya, US President Barack Obama expressed criticism towards an unnamed opposition leader for holding double standards on various issues affecting the country.
According to the statement, President Obama mentioned that the opposition leader had previously urged the US to refrain from interfering in Kenyan matters while in government, but now presses the US to challenge the current government.
The US President gave a hint about the leader's past role in government and their previous stance against US involvement in Kenyan affairs.
President Obama stated, "When I had a meeting with the opposition a few moments ago, one of the members whom I will not mention told me to press the government on certain issues then I told them you were in government, you were the one who was telling the US to keep off…" during a meeting with civil society at Kenyatta University’s Yali Regional Leadership Centre.
He further emphasized that some individuals change their stance on US involvement depending on whether they are in power or not. "Everyone when they are not in power want the US Government to press the (Kenya) Government in power on this or that issue, but I remember when you were in power you told us (the US Government) to mind its own business…"
Meeting with Opposition Leaders ¶
President Obama met with key opposition leaders, including Raila Odinga, Moses Wetangula, Kalonzo Musyoka, and Martha Karua, at the Safaricom Indoor Arena to discuss governance, security, and democracy.
According to Mr. Musyoka, as reported by the Daily Nation, the meeting was very important, and the opposition leaders plan to address a press conference on the matter.
