President Uhuru Kenyatta is expected to arrive in Mogadishu, Somalia, to attend the inauguration of Somali President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo.
Farmajo won the February election, defeating 19 other candidates, including former leader Hassan Sheikh.
Security Measures in Place ¶
Mogadishu is under lockdown as leaders from East Africa gather for the inauguration. Special forces from the Somalia National Army, police, and the African Union Mission to Somalia have created a security cordon around the venue.
Security forces are on high alert due to threats from the terror group al-Shabaab, which has vowed to fight the new president. Earlier this week, the militants launched a mortar attack on the presidential palace in Mogadishu.
Airports, roads, and major streets in the capital will remain closed until the attending leaders, including Uhuru, are safely back home. Guests attending the ceremony will be screened before being allowed into the venue.
Kenya is a close ally of Somalia and has a significant military presence in the country, fighting against al-Shabaab.
