Shinel Wanja, the daughter of gospel singer Gloria Muliro, has shared her personal story of growing up in a home where domestic violence was present. This comes after Gloria Muliro separated from her husband, who she accused of subjecting her to domestic violence.
Shinel Wanja expressed support for her mother and shared details about her own childhood, including being forced to sleep outside because home was not a safe place and having to work as a waitress in a bar. She stated:
Love who you are. There is a reason I am Shinel Wanja from Embu, brought up in a domestic violence-controlled home, slept out many times because home was hell, once worked as a waitress in a bar, and a soap promoter in a supermarket, once stole vegetables at our neighbor's farm because we had no ten bob to buy vegetables for ugali, lived in a shabby house paying 1700 and sometimes this money lacked and God knows what else.
She emphasized that despite these challenges, she does not let her past define her, saying,
I don't have to cry over my past. It's the same past that pays me now, the great invitation I have been invited to encourage young people, the TV and radio programs, and the WAWEZA NETWORK VISION, yes I read books but most of what I share is my story. You can make it despite your situation. The challenges I went through give me character and experience I would never have attained by joining Oxford University.
Shinel Wanja also shared her faith and how it has helped her find purpose, stating,
I am not my past. I am a child of the Most High God.
Her message aims to encourage others not to be held back by their past, emphasizing that one's past does not define them.
