Gunmen attacked Mpeketoni, and according to security officials, the attackers are suspected to be militants. The attack lasted for hours, with attackers opening fire and spraying bullets from two minibuses.

Army spokesman Major Emmanuel Chirchir stated, "The gunmen entered Mpeketoni, a trading center in Lamu, and started shooting people around in town."

Residents reported that the attack was prolonged. John-Allan Namu tweeted, "UPDATE: 47 bodies at Mpeketoni mortuary, one more succumbs to injuries in hospital. Death toll now 48 #MpeketoniAttack"

Hassan Musa, Lamu county medical officer, confirmed that the Mpeketoni mortuary received 48 bodies, as reported by @AllyMtenzi and shared by K24 TV.
