Emmanuel Katto, a renowned Ugandan motor rally legend, rose to prominence shortly after joining the sport, winning the national championship in 1995, 1996, and 1997. His distinctive driving style, affable personality, and engaging pre-event comments garnered significant media attention and amassed the largest fan base in Africa.
In a series of recollections, the EMKA Rally Team recounts Katto's thrilling close battles with Karim Hirji, Chipper, and Charles Muhangi in the popular Pearl of Africa Uganda Rally. Although Katto continued to compete in the 2000s, his battles were less memorable than those in the preceding decade. The near misses during this period explain why Emmanuel Katto is considered one of Uganda's rally legends who never won the coveted Pearl Rally.
Pearl Rally 1997 ¶
Emmanuel Katto and Karim Hirji impressed at the world championship Kenya Safari Rally earlier in the season, driving powerful Toyota Celica ST205 vehicles. Upon returning to the Pearl Rally, they were the focal points of attention.
Chipper Adams, driving a Toyota Supra 'Hissing Cobra,' emerged as the winner after the top contenders faltered, much to the disappointment of their fans.
Pearl Rally 1998 ¶
Charles Muhangi made his second appearance in his popular Subaru Impreza, dubbed Ekitaguriiro. The rivalry between Katto and Muhangi was fueled by their exchanges in the media, generating excitement among fans who attended the event in large numbers. The competition primarily involved Katto, Muhangi, Karim Hirji, and Chipper Adams, with other participants including Satwant Singh, Moses Lumala, Herbert 'Fatso' Lubega, and Charlie Lubega.
During the height of the contest, Katto's vehicle suffered two punctures after hitting a hump. Karim stopped and provided Katto with a tire, marking a turning point in the race. Ultimately, Karim and Muhangi were tied, and Muhangi was declared the winner due to being the quickest in the opening section of the rally. He subsequently claimed the national championship from Katto.
Pearl Rally 1999 ¶
The 1999 Pearl Rally was an exhilarating event that almost ended in disaster. Katto dropped out early, leaving Karim, Muhangi, and Chipper engaged in a fierce competition on the second day in the sugar plantations of Lugazi. Muhangi, who had accumulated maximum Africa championship points in Namibia, Zimbabwe, and Zambia, exercised caution since local drivers were ineligible to score ARC points. However, while pursuing Chipper, a truck loaded with sugar canes suddenly crossed onto the narrow farm road, approximately 350 meters ahead of Karim. He was forced to brake abruptly, and his car skidded for 220 meters before bursting into flames, as reported by the police. Karim and his co-driver, Frank Nekusa, were airlifted to a hospital in Kampala. Chipper won the race, while Muhangi finished second and secured maximum ARC points, becoming the first Ugandan to win the Africa championship.
Pearl Rally 2000 ¶
This edition of the Pearl Rally was a heartbreak for top drivers and their fans alike. A successful fundraising campaign, supported by fellow drivers, companies, and fans, resulted in the purchase of a new Mitsubishi Evo5 for Chipper Adams. With Chipper's new car, Karim's Subaru WRC, Muhangi's Ekitaguriiro, and a sizable number of international crews, the 2000 Pearl Rally was expected to be highly competitive. However, by mid-day on the first leg, nearly all top drivers, including Chipper, had dropped out of the race. Charlie Lubega, who was not considered a contender, went on to win the race, amidst dramatic scenes where drivers confronted each other in the heat of the moment.
Pearl Rally 2002 ¶
Emmanuel Katto's hopes of winning the Pearl Rally title were hindered by an early booking penalty, a puncture, and mechanical failure. South African driver Johnny Gemmel won the race, followed by Kenyan driver Glen Emond. Katto beat Belgian driver Bernard Dethier to secure third place, while then-national champion Charlie Lubega finished fifth. Gemmel's victory in the Pearl Rally sealed his win in the Africa championship.
Pearl Rally 2006 ¶
Katto returned to the Pearl Rally in 2006 but failed to complete the race, which saw nearly the entire field drop out due to the challenging route conditions.
When asked if he could have done anything differently if given a second chance, Katto's response was not recorded.
