A 73-year-old man, Turgut Oymen, from the village of Kiziltas in central Turkey, chopped off his genitalia and threw it into a river after his wife, Nese, 70, ended their 50-year marriage for a younger man.
According to reports, Nese, who was in Istanbul, informed her husband over the phone that she had fallen in love with a 55-year-old doctor and would not return home.
Oymen then proceeded to the river, where he severed his genitalia and disposed of it in the water before seeking medical attention.
The injured pensioner was hospitalized, and doctors attempted to locate the severed organ along the riverbank but were unsuccessful. They subsequently operated on Oymen to treat the wound.
A hospital spokesperson stated, "He lost a significant amount of blood and is fortunate to have survived given his age."
Oymen explained to medical staff that he had chosen to harm himself because he felt his genitalia had become useless, and he no longer saw himself as a man.
A friend of Oymen, Mehmet Koc, 70, described how the news of Nese’s departure had devastated Oymen, saying, "He was entirely devoted to Nese, and when she told him she wouldn’t return, his world collapsed."
Koc added that Oymen had pleaded with Nese to come back, but she refused, stating she was in love with the doctor. Oymen confided that he had dedicated his life to Nese and couldn’t consider meeting someone else.
Oymen is currently recovering and undergoing treatment for depression.
