The Great Shoe Debate: High or Low? ¶
July 24, 2019
When it comes to footwear, many of us are torn between the comfort of flat shoes and the style of high heels. But, did you know that both types of shoes can cause a variety of problems?
According to physiotherapists, high heels can cause lower back and knee pain, as well as long-term spine health issues. Dr. Eugene Kalman Genga, a physician and rheumatologist, explains that high heels can lead to joint disease in the foot bones, ingrown toenails, neuroma, hammertoe deformities, calluses, and bunions.
On the other hand, flat shoes may seem like a better option, but they can also cause problems. Janet Ogego, a physiotherapist at Apex Physiotherapy, says that flat shoes offer little to no arch support, which can lead to serious problems such as fallen arches and plantar fasciitis.
So, what's the solution? Martin Otieno Ongwen, a physiotherapist with a specialization in orthopaedic manual therapy and movement dysfunction, advises that the issue of whether to wear flat shoes or high heels is not so clear-cut. He suggests that the type of shoe to wear depends on various factors, including the length of time you wear them, how often you wear them, and whether you have any underlying foot conditions.
Ultimately, the best solution is to see a specialist, such as a physiotherapist or podiatrist, who can help determine what type of feet you have and recommend the perfect shoe for your individual needs.
