Konwal Qayyum, a 29-year-old woman, suffered severe burns on her face after her friend allegedly splashed sulphuric acid on her while she was asleep. The attack, reportedly motivated by jealousy, occurred when Qayyum was about to become an air hostess.

The incident left Qayyum's face severely disfigured, requiring extensive reconstruction surgery. Surgeons, including Dr. Aasim Shahmalak from Manchester, worked tirelessly to rebuild her features, using tissue from her thigh to create a new nose and restoring her eyebrows and eyelashes.

According to Dr. Shahmalak, Qayyum's transformation has been remarkable, and she has since gotten married. He expressed his delight in being able to help with her eyebrows and new eyelashes, stating, "The surgeons have done a remarkable job in rebuilding her features. I was delighted to be able to help with her eyebrows and new eyelashes. Also, it was wonderful to hear how she has turned her life around, found happiness and got married,"

Dr. Shahmalak also noted that Qayyum is currently undergoing further surgery to remodel her nose, with significant progress already made. He emphasized the rewarding experience of being part of her recovery, saying, "At the moment she is having her nose remodelled and so far there has been great progress. It has been so rewarding to be part of her recovery,"

The case highlights the issue of acid attacks, which, according to Dr. Shahmalak, is a concern, with five women being victims of such attacks. The ease of accessing acid on the streets near Qayyum's home may have contributed to the attack.

Response and Consequences

Dr. Shahmalak not only provided medical assistance but also donated 50,000 pounds to support Qayyum and five other girls who were victims of acid burns.
