Jackline Mwende, whose story drew widespread attention and sympathy after her hands were allegedly cut off by her husband, is recovering well.
Mwende has also received a brand new permanent house from a group of women parliamentarians, who came together to construct the house and provide her with shopping.
Background ¶
Mwende's story began when she was attacked by her husband, Stephen Ngila, 34, on July 18, 2016. Ngila was arrested for attempting to kill Mwende and denied the charges. He is currently in remand. The man's relatives also refuted claims that Mwende's husband was behind the attack.
Mwende stated that she had been separated from her husband for three months after failing to conceive, and he attacked her with a panga because the couple was childless during their seven-year marriage.
Response and Support ¶
Mwende's story attracted sympathy from far and wide, and well-wishers helped her get prosthetic arms. The group of women parliamentarians who constructed the house and provided her with shopping are the latest to offer support.
An investigation by other newsrooms found that Mwende's case was one of many incidents of violence against women in Kenya.
