A family in Kabula village, Bumula Constituency, Bungoma County, has made a vow to never send any of their children to university after losing two sons in separate incidents.
According to the parents, Mr. Godfrey and Elizabeth Barasa, their firstborn son, Ignatius Nyongesa, died in 2010 while in his third year at Makerere University in Uganda. He was a Bachelor of Law student and succumbed to a bullet wound during student leadership campaigns. A dispute between a Kenyan and a Ugandan student led to the shooting by a watchman on duty.
Five years later, their second-born son, Tobias Sifuna, was killed by the Al Shabaab during the Garissa University terror attack. Tobias was a second-year Bachelor of Education Student, and the family had invested heavily in his education with high hopes for the future.
Godfrey Barasa has expressed that the pain of losing two sons is unbearable and has therefore vowed not to allow any of his remaining kids to join university.
