The English Premier League has introduced a new, sponsor-free visual identity, which will come into effect from the 2016-17 season onwards.

The Premier League is ending its 12-year partnership with Barclays bank, opting to become a 'clean brand' and be known simply as 'the Premier League'. This decision follows a trend set by major American sporting competitions such as the NFL and NBA.

New Logo and Branding

A new logo, featuring a crowned lion's head, will replace the current logo. The new visual identity aims to be relevant, modern, and flexible, celebrating everyone involved in the Premier League.

Premier League managing director Richard Masters stated, 'We are very pleased with the outcome: a visual identity which is relevant, modern and flexible that will help us celebrate everyone that makes the Premier League.'

History of Title Sponsors

Canadian brewery Carling was the Premier League's first title sponsor from 1993 to 2001. Barclaycard then took over, followed by Barclays itself in 2004. In 2012, Barclays paid £120 million for its most recent three-year contract.

Financial Implications

The Premier League is the most lucrative football championship in the world, with 17 of its clubs featuring in the top 30 of Deloitte's football rich list. A new domestic television rights deal worth £5.14 billion is set to begin in the 2016-17 season, and the forthcoming sale of overseas TV rights is expected to add around £3 billion to the Premier League's revenue.
