Kenya's national women's volleyball team, the African Queens, have won successive matches in the second leg of the women's FIVB Grand Prix in Algiers, Algeria.
The team defeated Mexico 3-0 (25-15, 25-17, 25-22) on Friday night, followed by a 3-0 victory (25-20, 25-16, 25-15) over Australia on Saturday night.
Despite the absence of setter Janet Wanja due to illness, the team's performance was cheered on by a sizable Kenyan crowd, including Kenya's Ambassador to Algeria, Moi Lemoshira.
According to Kenya coach David Lung'aho,
"I am delighted with our recovery from our performance in Mexico. We have worked hard in the past few days to correct some basic mistakes, then my players have taken note of what it means to play at this level,"
The team's target is to win all their remaining matches by either 3-0 or 3-1 scores to increase their chances of advancing to the play-offs in Australia.
With eight points from five outings, Kenya may leapfrog hosts Algeria and Kazakhstan into fourth position in Group 3.
The team will face Algeria in their final group game on Sunday night.
In other Group 3 matches, Cuba defeated Kazakhstan 3-0, Colombia beat Peru 3-0, and Algeria won 3-2 against Australia.
