Kenya marked its 50th anniversary of independence last month with relatively low-key celebrations. The occasion coincided with the death and funeral of Nelson Mandela, which may have contributed to the subdued tone. Additionally, the past nine months following the Jubilee coalition's controversial election win have presented challenges.

The initial confidence displayed by the Jubilee coalition from May to September has been somewhat tempered. One factor contributing to this shift is that the realities of governance have likely introduced complexity to their endeavors.
