The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has denied owning BVR kits found with National Youth Service (NYS) staff who were allegedly registering voters in Nairobi.
According to reports, residents of Runda estate had rounded up men in NYS uniform who were registering people using BVR kits similar to those used by IEBC.
However, IEBC stated that the kits belong to the Ministry of Devolution and National Planning, and were being used for Cohort Biometric Registration of NYS personnel, not for voter registration.
IEBC requested the Ministry of Devolution and Planning to suspend the NYS Cohort Biometric Registration until the process of preparing the register of voters has been completed.
"We believe that the NYS biometric cohort registration was ill-timed especially when the Commission is undertaking voter registration campaign,"
the IEBC statement read.
"Even as the investigations continue, the Commission has requested the Ministry of Devolution and Planning to suspend the NYS Cohort Biometric Registration until the process of preparing the register of voters has been completed,"
the statement added.
IEBC officers, accompanied by local politicians, monitored the situation at Gigiri Police Station.
The incident occurred after youths dressed in NYS uniform were caught with BVR kits by angry Runda estate residents and surrendered to police.
The youths were busted at PCEA Beula church in Runda.
