Marsabit Governor Ukur Yatani has announced his defection to the Jubilee Party after months of denying he would leave the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party.
Yatani, who was once branded a party prostitute by ODM leader Raila Odinga for being a rebel, made the announcement on Tuesday, February 21, citing his desire to seek re-election.
According to Yatani, he and his team are now members of the Jubilee Party and are not afraid of intruders. He warned his opponents against spreading false propaganda that he wants to use the back door to clinch the Jubilee ticket.
"I will join the party through the open route. There is no need in giving warnings and threats to the president over ticket issues. We soon will know the decision of the people because they have the voice," said Yatani.
Yatani's move comes after a mass exodus from ODM in September 2016, when several politicians defected from the party. At the time, Raila Odinga branded the defectors, including Yatani, as party prostitutes who should give back the seats they were elected on for being party rebels.
