On March 8th, 2017, President Uhuru Kenyatta and his Deputy William Ruto visited Turkana County.
Turkana Governor Josphat Nanok accused President Kenyatta of being overly interested in the recently discovered oil in Turkana. Nanok also claimed that the national government had not allocated sufficient funds to the county.
President Kenyatta responded to these allegations, calling Governor Nanok an 'idiot' and a 'devil'. He stated that he would not be intimidated by the accusations.
According to the President, "Mtu akisimama hapa aseme ati Uhuru ako na haja na mafuta ya wengine… Ashindwe, shetani mshenzi! Watu wasiwe watu ambao watakuja kudanganya wakenya. Mimi sio ni mimi napitisha sheria, ni bunge. Mimi ni kuweka naweka kidole! Alafu mjinga anakuja kusema hapa ati mimi nafanya mambo ya…"
President Kenyatta also told residents that their decision to vote for him or not would not have significant consequences. He emphasized that Governor Nanok's comments would not scare him.
The President added, "Kwa kufikiria mimi ni mtu wa kutishwa watafute mwingine, ehhh… Kura ni kura na tutakuja kuomba kama wengine. Mutupatie mukose kutupatia ahhh… Kwani munafikiria dunia itaisha? Wacha story mingi bwana, dunia itaendelea. Ama namna gani, si ni hivyo? Na ndipo twasema kwa viongozi tuheshimiane jameni!"
