Kiambu Governor William Kabogo has announced plans to ban Kenya Mpya buses from operating in Kiambu County, citing their failure to adhere to traffic rules.
Speaking during the burial of Onesmas Ndungu Kimani in Gatunyu village, Gatanga Constituency, Kabogo mentioned that the buses have been involved in multiple fatal accidents. He attributed this to reckless driving and vowed to halt their operations in the county.
Kabogo recalled his past efforts to prevent the buses from entering Thika Town during his tenure as Juja MP. Now, with traffic control under the mandate of devolved governments, he pledged to ensure Kenya Mpya buses are not allowed into Thika Town until the safety issues are addressed.
According to Kabogo, "During my time as Juja MP, I had challenges trying to prevent these buses from driving into Thika Town. However, since traffic control is now the mandate of devolved governments, I will ensure Kenya Mpya buses are not allowed to enter Thika Town until this issue is cleared." He added, "We shall investigate Kenya Mpya buses and find out what exactly is wrong with their operations."
Kigumo MP Jamlek Kamau echoed Kabogo’s sentiments, questioning why the buses were still operational despite their involvement in numerous accidents and fatalities. Kamau urged authorities to identify the bus owners and launch investigations into their operations, highlighting the buses’ role in several accidents on the Thika Superhighway.
Kenya Mpya buses have faced intense public scrutiny lately due to allegations of reckless driving and their suspected role in causing several road accidents.
