According to Darius Paduch, M.D., Ph.D., an associate professor of urology and reproductive medicine at Weill Cornell Medicine, aging can affect the quality and intensity of orgasms.
As men get older, they may experience a range of changes that can impact their orgasms. Here are five key factors to consider:
- Distractions and mental focus: As men age, they may find it harder to maintain focus during sex due to increased distractions from work, family, and other responsibilities. Dr. Paduch notes that the brain plays a critical role in achieving orgasm, and distractions can make it harder to reach climax.
- Lack of intimate touch: A study in Archives of Sexual Behavior found that older men who engaged in less sexual touching, such as hugging and kissing, were more likely to experience difficulty reaching orgasm. Intimate touch can increase feelings of closeness and reduce inhibitions, making it easier to achieve orgasm.
- Low testosterone: Testosterone levels naturally decline with age, which can affect the intensity and frequency of orgasms. Research from the European Male Aging study suggests that low testosterone can lead to decreased sexual desire, fewer morning erections, and increased erectile dysfunction.
- Weight gain and obesity: Excess weight, particularly around the midsection, can convert testosterone to estradiol, a form of estrogen. This can inhibit erections and reduce sexual satisfaction. A study in the Asian Journal of Andrology found that excess estradiol can hinder relaxation of the smooth muscles in the penis, making it harder to achieve orgasm.
- Underlying health issues: Certain health conditions, such as diabetes, can damage nerves and reduce sensitivity, making it harder to achieve orgasm. Dr. Paduch notes that he diagnoses one-third of his patients with abrupt changes in sexual function with diabetes.
While these changes can affect the quality and intensity of orgasms, there are steps men can take to mitigate their impact. Regular exercise, a healthy diet, and stress reduction techniques can all help to improve overall health and increase sexual satisfaction.
