Kenya's national football team, Harambee Stars, suffered a 2-0 aggregate loss to Ethiopia in the African Nations Championships qualifying match at Nyayo National Stadium, ending their hopes of making a debut in the tournament.
The team's loss is the latest in a series of setbacks, including elimination from the Olympic and All Africa Games qualifiers earlier this year, as well as a loss to Lesotho in the preliminary phase of the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
According to coach Bobby Williamson, the team's inability to convert penalties was a significant factor in their loss.
"If you cannot convert penalties then you have a little chance of winning a football match,"
he said, referencing the two missed penalties by Kevin Kimani and Ali Abondo over the two games against Ethiopia.
Poor Performance and Management ¶
Analysts attribute the team's poor performance to the declining standards of the game locally, citing poor management and the low quality of the Kenyan Premier League. Renowned coach Bob Oyugi noted,
"If we cannot beat the likes of Lesotho, Ethiopia and Uganda, then with all due respect to these countries there is something terribly wrong somewhere,"
Former international Peter Lichungu echoed Oyugi's sentiments, stating that
"We have some players who play well in the Kenyan Premier League but then go missing when donning national colours."
He also pointed out that even top teams like Gor Mahia have underperformed in regional competitions.
Football stakeholders, including Football Kenya Federation Chairmanship aspirants Nick Mwendwa and Gor Semelang’o, have called for more serious preparations for national team engagements.
