Mudavadi Demands Rotich's Resignation ¶
ANC leader Musalia Mudavadi has called for the resignation of Finance Minister Henry Rotich, citing allegations of corruption that have tarnished Kenya's image.
Rotich and his colleagues, including Permanent Secretary Kamau Thugge, Principal Secretary Susan Jemtai Koech, and former Kerio Valley Development Authority (KVDA) Director David Kimosop, are facing 15 corruption-related charges.
The charges stem from the alleged embezzlement of KSh 19 billion meant for the construction of the Arror and Kimwarer dams.
Rotich and his colleagues were released on a KSh 50 million bond each or a KSh 15 million cash bail.
On Tuesday, July 23, 2019, Rotich and his colleagues appeared before Milimani Chief Magistrate Douglas Ogoti, where they were charged with corruption.
ANC leader Musalia Mudavadi has expressed concern that the corruption allegations against Rotich and his colleagues have damaged Kenya's reputation.
Speaking to journalists on Tuesday, July 23, 2019, Mudavadi said, "The Finance Ministry is like a hot seat... things have changed, and in the current administration, everyone is expected to take responsibility and no one is to blame the leaders. You must account for public funds."
He added, "It's not necessary to have a high-level qualification to hold the position, as the President can appoint someone who can handle the role as a deputy."
Mudavadi has called for Rotich's resignation, saying that the corruption allegations have damaged Kenya's image.
Rotich was arrested on Monday, July 22, 2019, after he surrendered to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) headquarters.
