Kenyan athlete Janet Wanja collapsed in her room before a major game against Mexico in Algeria. She was later diagnosed with a stomach infection at the hospital, which made her unable to participate in the match against Algeria.

Despite Wanja's absence, the Malkia Stars team went on to beat Mexico three sets to nil and also defeated Australia by the same margin. Since winning the AFCON a month prior, the team had played five matches, resulting in wins against Mexico and Australia, but losses against Peru and Colombia.

The team's schedule had been intense, with 10 high-intensity international matches in the past month, from AFCON to the Grand Prix.

The recovered account cited reporting by Mpasho.
