The National Super Alliance (NASA) is nearing the final stages of establishing a power sharing formula among its four principals, should they win the upcoming election.
A 12-member committee tasked with drawing up the formula has reportedly made significant progress, outlining how each principal will be accommodated in the event of a NASA victory.
According to sources, the coalition plans to create a position of Chief Minister, equivalent to the Prime Minister, for one of the two principals who will not secure the presidential or running mate slots.
The remaining two principals will be considered for Speaker and Majority Leader roles in the National Assembly or the Senate, as stated by a source privy to the discussions in an interview with the Standard: "Apart from the presidential flag-bearer and his running mate, the remaining two principals will be given the speaker and majority leader roles, either in the National Assembly or the Senate."
All four principals will also be allowed to nominate members for a 22-member cabinet, with the president allocated five slots, the deputy president six slots, and the remaining two principals three slots each. The smaller parties within the coalition will receive the remaining slots.
A source quoted by the Standard emphasized the importance of regional representation in the cabinet: "We want to make sure that the cabinet slots are shared among all the people of Kenya. The principals will not be allowed to nominate people for their cabinet slots from one region."
Reports suggest that the committee has agreed on the criteria for selecting the flag-bearer, which includes influence, popularity, and party dominance. This could potentially put Raila Odinga, who leads the largest party in Kenya, the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), in a favorable position.
