July 23, 2019 - Shoprite, the South African retail giant, is expanding its presence in Kenya with the opening of its third outlet in the country, located in Mombasa's City Mall.

The new store, which is set to create 115 new jobs, will be Shoprite's third in Kenya, following its first outlet at Westgate in December 2018 and its second at Garden City Mall in March 2019.

Shoprite had initially planned to open its Mombasa outlet in March 2019, but the opening has been delayed to August 2019.

The retailer has signalled plans to open two more stores in Kenya this year, one in Karen and another at an undisclosed location.

City Mall, which had previously kicked out Nakumatt due to Sh27.8 million in rent arrears, is excited about the new development, with proprietor Anish Doshi saying, "City Mall is very excited that Shoprite are now only a few weeks away from opening their very first store in Mombasa and their third store overall in Kenya."

Shoprite's expansion in Kenya comes as the retailer gears up to compete with other major players in the market, including Naivas, Tuskys, and Carrefour.
