Nairobi City County government has taken a bold step in ejecting hawkers selling meat at the City Market, a move that has sparked running battles between the county askaris and the hawkers.
According to reports, close to 100 hawkers were ejected from the market, with their tables and goods confiscated by the county on July 23, 2019.
The move comes after an intensive pressure from the media, ministry of health, and shop owners, who obtained a court order to have the hawkers removed.
Director of Enforcement Ever Muirioko stated that the county was acting on the court order, as well as other factors including health status.
After the eviction, the hawkers camped at City Hall, demanding an audience with Governor Sonko, which did not materialize.
The hawkers are now accusing Sonko of not heeding to his recent remarks of allowing them to do business in the market.
‘‘We were told by Sonko to do business here, he is now chasing us out, we have bills to pay, rents and school fees where do they want us to go?’’ A trader asked.
