Apostle James Maina Ng’ang’a has promised to renovate the Gigiri Police Station, where he spent two nights, to the tune of Sh3.5 million. The pastor described the station, particularly the toilets, as being in a pathetic condition.
Ng’ang’a made the promise to the Officer in Charge, Joshua Ekirapa, saying, "Before I left, I told OCS Joshua Ekirapa I will come back and repair the toilets."
The pastor was detained at the station on Wednesday and Thursday while awaiting a hearing for a case in which he is accused of causing death by dangerous driving, failure to report an accident, providing false information, and conspiracy to defeat justice.
During a sermon, Ng’ang’a appealed to his congregation for financial support, which The Star newspaper reported was met with enthusiasm, describing a ‘near stampede’ as members rushed to donate.
It remains unclear whether the police department will accept the proposed donation, with some speculating it could be perceived as an attempt at bribery.
Ng’ang’a also used the sermon to criticize Inspector General Joseph Boinnet, stating, "Boinnet, I want to tell you that you must learn how to speak to the media. If I were you, I wouldn’t have commented on the accident before investigations were completed… You elicited the controversy in which I was condemned unheard, vilified, and lynched through the media."
This criticism stems from a media briefing where the Inspector General mentioned that Ng’ang’a was not behind the wheel during the fatal accident, which the pastor believes led to misconceptions that the IG was defending him.
Ng’ang’a further urged his congregation to pray for journalists who he claims have reported falsehoods about him.
