An 8-year-old Kenyan girl who presented a bouquet of flowers to President Barack Obama during his visit to the country has gained significant attention from her schoolmates, leaving her feeling overwhelmed.
Joan Wamaitha, a student at Mariakani Primary School in Nairobi’s South B, had her big moment when Obama arrived in Nairobi for his first tour of the country as the American president. She has since been preparing for exams while dealing with the newfound attention.
During the morning assembly on Monday, head teacher Lucy Obonyo shared a message of possibility with the students, similar to the one Obama delivered to an exclusive audience in Nairobi.
Joan, who wore a badge featuring a photo of Obama and a slogan about the "American Dream", was the center of attention among her peers. According to her teacher, Pauline Musyoka, Joan is a smart and hardworking student who is struggling to cope with the numerous questions from her fellow pupils.
Joan was chosen to meet the US president from Mama Ngina Children’s Home, where she resides.
