A storm is brewing in Kakamega county as Senator Boni Khalwale and Governor Wycliffe Oparanya, both members of NASA allied parties, are set to clash.
Khalwale announced plans to expose over 20 scandals in Oparanya’s government, citing the Auditor General’s report, in the weeks leading up to the August 8 election.
According to The Standard, Khalwale promised to floor Oparanya in the upcoming election despite Oparanya having the support of Raila Odinga.
"The scandals will not be propaganda but actual looting in the Auditor General’s report. I will issue scandal after scandal to the Kakamega people in weekly doses so that they can know what has been happening,"
said Khalwale.
Oparanya’s communication director, Sumba Juma, responded to Khalwale’s threats, stating that the Senator had the right to oversight but should adhere to the law.
"But let him, as he reveals the so-called scandals, stick to the law. If he diverts then we will be forced to address it legally. He has the right to a campaign strategy so long as the campaigns don’t go against the ethics,"
added Juma.
The two county leaders have been at odds for years, with each accusing the other of frustrating their work. In 2015, Khalwale had Oparanya summoned by the Senate to answer questions about audit queries on the use of public resources.
"I am not malicious in summoning the governor. If you have no ambition, you have no business being in politics. I can see Oparanya is busy engaging in sideshows on a matter I cannot take responsibility for, it is the auditor general who raised these issues,"
said Khalwale in 2015.
The Daily Nation reported that Oparanya had been summoned to give answers to the senate after initially being charged in a court of law for disregarding summonses on audit queries.
