A fatal car accident occurred on January 1, 2016, along the Nakuru-Eldoret highway at Salgaa, resulting in the deaths of five teenagers. The victims were traveling in a saloon car that collided with a bus while en route to a New Year's party in Eldoret.
Among the deceased was Derrick, a new recruit at DJ MO's System Unit DJ Academy. DJ MO expressed his sadness over the loss through social media, stating:
He is Derrick and joined system unit Dj academy this December… just after he cleared high school … he was involved on a road accident Friday morning at 2am …On salgaa road they hit head to head on a coming bus Derrick and his his 4 Friends died on the spot…. Really hurting and sad -but it is well -we stand with the family and send our condolences -He was one of our students at system unit Dj academy -Nakuru Campus
