On July 23, 2019, the world of skateboarding witnessed a groundbreaking movement with the launch of Surf Ghana and Skate Gal, the first all-girls skate crew in the country.

Founded by Sandy Alibo and Kuukua Eshun, the initiative aims to provide a platform for young women to engage in skateboarding, a sport often perceived as male-dominated.

As Tony Hawk aptly puts it, "I consider skateboarding an art form, a lifestyle and a sport. 'Action sport' would be the least offensive categorization."

Surf Ghana and Skate Gal are working towards creating a safe space for women to learn, interact, and connect through skateboarding, with over 60 women already participating in the initiative.

With a goal to raise 1,161,889 Ksh, the group has so far managed to collect 17,428 Ksh through crowdfunding efforts, which will be used to establish Accra's first real skate park.

Similar to the Shangilia project in Kenya, the skate park will provide a safe space for women to skate freely and easily, breaking the barriers that have hindered their participation in the sport.
