Pastor James Maina Ng'ang'a addressed his congregation at the Neno Evangelism Centre in Nairobi, speaking out against his critics amid controversy over a road accident that resulted in the death of a 43-year-old woman.
The pastor, who has been accused of being involved in the accident, told his congregants that those who speak ill of him will die before their time. He also stated that some of his critics, who are young and unmarried, will never get married or have children.
According to witnesses, Pastor Ng'ang'a was at the wheel of a Range Rover that killed Mercy Njeri and injured her husband. However, the pastor maintains that he was not driving the vehicle.
The Sunday Nation team was present at the church service, where congregants sang and danced to gospel songs. One of the songs included the lyrics, "Maadui wanizunguka baba, wanataka kunimaliza. Bila wewe sitayaweza" ("Enemies surround me, Father, bent on eliminating me. Without you I cannot handle it").
Response to Criticism ¶
Pastor Ng'ang'a addressed the controversy surrounding him, stating that he would not speak to the media to clarify the circumstances of the accident. He also questioned why his case was generating so much debate, citing a recent boat accident in Lake Victoria that resulted in the deaths of two children.
The pastor claimed that people were "fighting" him because of his success, and read from the book of Jeremiah, stating that "they will fight against you, but they will not overcome you, for I am with you to deliver you".
Investigation and Next Steps ¶
Inspector-General of Police Joseph Boinnet stated that the Director of Public Prosecution, Keriako Tobiko, will decide how to proceed with the case. Boinnet added that Tobiko has the option of returning the file and asking for further investigations.
