A growing concern among Kenyans about the quality of graduates from private universities, particularly Daystar University, has led to a call for employers to disregard these graduates.

Critics argue that Daystar University, which claims to be a premier communications and media studies hub, has failed to produce competent graduates, instead releasing individuals who prioritize financial gain over holistic societal development.

Evidence of Subpar Journalism

Examples of Daystar graduates working in media have been cited, including instances of promoting ethnic discord, accepting bribes, and producing low-quality content. For instance, a journalist named Evelyn Wambui allegedly ran a piece praising the National Transportation and Safety Authority (NTSA) without exploring the economic consequences of the project.

Other notable cases include Lillian Muli hosting fashion experts on her TV show, while genuine fashion gurus are overlooked, and Larry Madowo featuring commercial sex workers on his prime-time show, perpetuating a negative cultural narrative.

Consequences and Demands

The call to boycott Daystar University graduates is part of a larger effort to address the declining media standards in Kenya. Retired Chief Justice Willy Mutunga has cancelled an interview with NTV due to a botched interview conducted by one of their anchors.

Critics are urging guests to refrain from giving interviews to Daystar University graduates and are calling on media house owners to prioritize brains and intelligence over questionable qualifications. They are also demanding that the Education CS, Fred Matiang'i, suspend Daystar University's license and that Ezekiel Mutua and Francis Wangusi take charge of cleaning up the media industry.
