President Uhuru Kenyatta made a surprise visit to Somalia to attend the inauguration of President Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed.
Somalia, which faces regular attacks by the Al Shabaab, rarely hosts visits from foreign heads of state. As the Kenyan president, Uhuru likely faced higher risks due to Kenya's involvement in fighting the terrorist group.
Initially, the Kenyan embassy informed reporters that Uhuru would not attend the inauguration, indicating that secrecy was necessary for the visit.
Uhuru was accompanied by Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohamed and Majority Leader Aden Duale during his trip.
