Four Kenyan professional golfers have secured automatic spots to compete in the inaugural Karen Masters Golf tournament, set to take place from March 17-19 at the par 71 Karen Country Club in Nairobi.
Dismas Indiza, Simon Ngige, and Brian Njoroge were chosen due to their performance in the 2016 Barclays Kenya Open. Stefan Andersen was also selected based on his current form and his showing at the Johannesburg Open.
The tournament will feature 22 Kenyan and 40 European Challenge Tour professional golfers, including the four selected Kenyans. The Professional Golfers of Kenya (PGK) chairman, Jacob Okello, stated that the remaining 18 golfers will be chosen from qualifying tournaments.
The 40 European Challenge Tour professionals will be paired with local amateurs for a two-day Pro-Am event before competing against local professionals for the top prize. The tournament director, Andy Watt, mentioned that many of the European Challenge Tour golfers were invited to help them prepare for the upcoming Barclays Kenya Open.
The Karen Masters tournament has received sponsorship from the Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) to the tune of Sh12 million over a three-year period. The funds will be used for the prize fund, accommodations, food, participation fees, and technical officials.
