A ceremony for the burial of Priscah Auma Wayodi, a second-year student, in Siaya County took a dramatic turn when mourners refused to allow the reading of President Uhuru's condolence speech.
According to the statement, the rejection occurred because the mourners felt the president had not adequately addressed their concerns about the killings, which some perceived as indifference or 'dancing' over the victims' bodies.
The incident unfolded when Siaya County Deputy Commissioner Peter Jumwa attempted to read the speech, prompting an area MCA to intervene and request that the president first take action against those responsible for the students' deaths.
The MCA referenced comments made by Jubilee Majority Leader Aden Duale, who allegedly claimed knowledge of the attackers' identities.
In response to the tense atmosphere, Commissioner Jumwa chose not to proceed with the reading, stating, 'I have decided not to read it but I will present it to the family later.'
The burial continued without further disruptions, featuring a testimony from survivor Christine Anyango, who recounted the militants' demands during the attack.
Christine quoted the militants as saying, 'Tell your President to withdraw KDF from Somalia and ensure that North Eastern belongs to Muslims. Garissa must also be part of Somalia and not Kenya.'
Priscah Auma Wayodi was one of over 100 students killed in the Garissa terrorist attacks. Following the incident, the university was closed, and remaining students were transferred to Moi University Main Campus in Eldoret.
