Gretsa University has come to the defense of Mombasa County governor Ali Hassan Joho, stating that he is indeed a graduate of the institution.

Vice Chancellor Kuria Thuo confirmed that Governor Joho graduated from the university in December, specializing in Human Resource Management as a Bachelor of Commerce student.

The university dismissed claims that it was being pressured to revoke the governor's degree, with Thuo stating,

Gretsa has not been harassed or instructed by anyone to cancel any of our graduate’s degrees.

This comes after the Commission for University Education (CUE) audited 70 public and private universities in Kenya, including Gretsa University, following an order by Education CS Fred Matiang’i.

According to Thuo, the CUE report indicated that Gretsa University had met the required standards and guidelines. He also noted that Governor Joho was a duly registered student in a long-distance program since 2014 and graduated after satisfying the board of examiners and University Senate.

The defense of Governor Joho's academic credentials comes amid attempts by his political competitors to discredit his qualifications and potentially bar him from the August General Election.
