Frequent fatigue, hunger, and frequent trips to the washroom could be indicative of diabetes.

Other symptoms may include blurred vision and slow-healing wounds.

Global Awareness Campaign

ROCHE, a pharmaceutical company specializing in diagnostics, launched a campaign in November to educate Kenyans about diabetes, a month designated globally for diabetes awareness.

The campaign aims to dispel common myths surrounding diabetes, such as the notion that only wealthy individuals or those with poor eating habits can contract the disease.

According to James Ndwati, an educator with ROCHE,

Diabetes is when your sugar levels are above normal, i.e., 11.1 and above, then you are diabetic. There are four modifiable factors that lead to diabetes: excessive consumption of alcohol, cigarette smoking, lack of exercise, and poor eating habits.

Rising Diabetes Cases

Research estimates that the global number of people suffering from diabetes will exceed 500 million by 2030, up from the current 300 million.

Experts attribute this sharp rise to poor lifestyle choices.

Ndwati cites poor eating habits and a sedentary lifestyle as key contributors to the increasing incidence of diabetes.

He advises reducing alcohol consumption and cigarette smoking to help prevent the disease.
