Agriculture Secretary Felix Koskei stated that cheap illegal sugar imports are harming the sugar industry. According to Koskei, the market has been flooded with these imports by sugar barons and politicians, which continues to affect the industry.
Koskei mentioned plans to collaborate with law enforcement, the Kenya Sugar Board, the Bureau of Standards, and other stakeholders to prevent the entry of cheap imports into the country. He cited politics in the management of sugar mills and high production costs as factors impacting the industry, alongside the issue of cheap imports leading to delayed payments to farmers.
