Deputy President William Ruto stated that homosexuality has no place in Kenyan society, describing it as unchristian.
During a church service at the Africa Inland Church (AIC) Ziwani in Nairobi, Ruto reacted to the recent United States Supreme Court ruling granting same-sex marriages. He urged Kenyans to defend their beliefs.
Ruto said,
Homouality is against the plan of God, God did not create man and woman so that men would marry men and women marry women.
He called on Christians and Muslims to stand together against attempts to legalize gay unions in the country, emphasizing that no persuasion or theory could change their stance.
Ruto's comments came ahead of US President Barack Obama's visit to Kenya. National Assembly Majority Leader Aden Duale had previously criticized same marriages, stating that Kenya would not accept any push for their adoption during Obama's visit.
