A fatal accident occurred on Thursday evening along the Thika Superhighway near Ruiru town, resulting in one death and 15 serious injuries. According to Area OCPD Isaac Thuranira, the driver of the ISSKA mini bus, known as 'Maddcity', lost control while overtaking another vehicle and collided with a lorry traveling in the same direction.
The 'Maddcity' matatu was distinctive due to its heavy customization with graffiti on the exterior and multiple screens inside, and was known for playing loud music.
The accident led to a significant traffic congestion on the highway, with vehicles being diverted to the service lane to maintain traffic flow. Out of the 15 injured, 5 were critically hurt and taken to Kenyatta National Hospital, while the others were transported to Ruiru and Thika Hospitals.
The lorry involved in the accident was carrying building stones to Ruiru by-pass at the time of the incident. The wreckage of the mini bus was towed to Ruiru Police Station, and the body of the deceased was taken to Kenyatta University Mortuary.
Context and Response ¶
This incident comes after President Uhuru Kenyatta's directive last year allowing matatus to display graffiti on their exteriors, a move seen by many as a return to the era of 'matatu madness'.
