Barmaids in Nairobi are finding it difficult to attract potential husbands due to the negative perception surrounding their profession. According to them, most men view them as easy targets for casual relationships rather than as potential wives.
Their salaries, which range from Sh10,000 to Sh15,000 per month, are also deducted for any losses incurred, making it challenging for them to make ends meet. Many barmaids are single mothers who have been left by men who did not want to commit to a relationship.
Difficult Working Conditions ¶
Barmaids work long hours, often without breaks, and are expected to provide visual stimulation to patrons. Some establishments require them to dress scantily to attract more male clients. This has led to some barmaids being treated disrespectfully by patrons, with some even being touched inappropriately or pinched.
Despite these challenges, some barmaids are calling on men to look beyond their profession and consider them for marriage. They argue that they can make good wives and are not necessarily loose or promiscuous.
Social Stigma ¶
The social stigma surrounding the profession is also a major obstacle for barmaids who want to get married. Some men view them as having too much experience or being too worldly, making it difficult for them to find a husband.
However, not all men share this view. Some, like married journalist Juma, believe that barmaids can make good wives. He argues that they are victims of circumstance and should not be judged solely on their profession.

Barmaids are appealing to men to look at them differently and consider them for marriage. They want to be seen as individuals with their own strengths and weaknesses, rather than being defined solely by their profession.
