Police in Kenya are facing criticism for allegedly taking photos of high school students suspected of being involved in an incident on a bus bound for Nairobi from Kirinyaga. The photos, which included images of the students' private parts, were reportedly leaked on social media.
Many Kenyans have expressed outrage over the incident, with some calling for action to be taken against the police officers responsible. Carol wa Ndiangs commented, "Good morning friends…this day am a very angry Kenyan parent..just wondering how a police service that did all it could to cover up a murder" road accident " could easily uncover a young girl and expose her private parts to the whole world coz of bhang and match boxes??"
Jeff Makeke stated, "The police have shattered the lives, dreams and aspirations of those young children. They needed guidance not public ridicule!!! This is unacceptable and heads must roll…"
Others, including Fary Beibe and Rita Oyier, also condemned the actions of the police, with Rita Oyier saying, "When a police woman, a mother undresses a girl to search her, (which is ok) and then supervises the taking of her photo (which is not ok) and then some idiot from the same force posts the minors photo or shares or leaks it on social media Kenya is Ready for a Revolution."
Some commentators, such as Cyrus Kariuki, argued that all parties involved, including the students, shared responsibility for the incident. Cyrus Kariuki said, "However,in assigning blame, i think every body there is guilty of indecent and improper acts.. The girls are no better than the boys and the boys no better than the girls. The was consensual so let us not place blame on the boys by comments such as '…..whoever took those photos and sent them out is no better than the boys who were having with the girls'. Equal accountability is only fair."
According to reports, Kenya-Today News plans to contact the Kilimani Moms group for a possible mass action.
