The family of late Nyeri Governor Nderitu Gachagua has revealed his last wish before he died. According to the family, Gachagua had requested to be flown back to his Hiriga home in Nyeri before his death.
Gachagua died on Friday, February 24, while undergoing treatment in London, England, due to pancreatic cancer. His body will be flown back to Kenya.
As reported by his brother, Rigathi Gachagua, the family had made plans to fly him back to Kenya but the journey was stopped as he was too weak to travel. Rigathi said,
"He prepared for his departure. The governor would have wanted to come and rest at home, in fact, it was his wish to come and rest here in the county,"
Gachagua is the first governor to die in office under the devolved system of government. With his death, Deputy Governor Samuel Wamathai Githaiga will assume duty immediately as governor according to the constitution.
