On July 23, 2019, the National Land Commission (NLC) announced the shortlisting of 11 candidates for the position of chairman, including former KRA Commissioner General John Njiraini.

The interviews for the chairperson's position started on July 29, while those for the commissioner began on July 30 and ended on August 2.

The shortlisted candidates will appear before a panel appointed to recruit a new team at the commission, which includes Kennedy Kihara from the Office of the President, former chair of the National Construction Authority Arch. Steven Oundo, and others.

Upon the receipt of the names of successful applicants, the President will nominate the chairperson and 8 members within 14 days and forward them to the National Assembly for vetting within 21 days.

The nine-member Muhamed Swazuri-led team completed a tour of duty on February 19, 2019, after completing the mandatory non-renewable six-year term.

The commission has been in the limelight over corruption claims, especially on compulsory acquisitions and compensations for state projects.
