The government has announced a ban on the ongoing demonstrations led by CORD leaders, citing concerns over violence.
According to Interior Principal Secretary Karanja Kibicho, the protests have turned violent, with participants armed with various weapons. This announcement was made after Kibicho received 11 police officers who were injured during demonstrations in Kisumu and Siaya.
Kibicho stated that the government has decided to ban the protests, which CORD had planned to hold every Monday. This decision comes as the United Nations High Commission for Human Rights (UNCHR) condemned the killings of protesters by police in some parts of the country.
The UNCHR also called on the government to respect the right to assemble peacefully, in accordance with national and international laws. In a statement, the UNCHR urged both the authorities and demonstrators to avoid violence, saying, "However, as we call on the authorities to ensure that acts of violence are not repeated, we also prevail upon the demonstrators, to protest peacefully, and not resort to violence, as has sometimes been in the previous protests."
Earlier, Police Spokesman Charles Owino warned youths participating in the anti-IEBC demonstrations against targeting police officers, stating that any violence against officers would be met with a response.
