A Ugandan Member of Parliament, Gideon Onyango, has alleged that there is a massive registration of Ugandans to vote in the August polls in Kenya.
According to Onyango, who represents the Samia Bugwe North constituency, many Ugandans living in districts bordering Kenya are being registered to vote. He posed a question on the voter registration during a sitting in parliament on Wednesday, February 15.
Onyango was quoted by The Daily Monitor as saying,
"Enrollment of Ugandans into the Kenyan voter register is massive. This is happening in Busia. My question to the Prime Minister is, is our government aware?"
However, Uganda's Prime Minister Rukahana Rugunda was stopped from answering the question by the parliament deputy speaker Jacob Oulanyah, who stated that the question touched on foreign relations.
Context and Response ¶
Claims of foreigners getting registered ahead of the General Election have been on the rise. Opposition leader Raila Odinga had previously made similar remarks. Additionally, Teso North MP Mary Emase was allegedly arrested in Uganda for registering Ugandans as voters.
On Tuesday, February 14, two Rwandans and one Burundian were also arrested allegedly attempting to use forged documents to get IDs and register as voters in Elgeyo Marakwet.

The allegations of voter registration irregularities have raised concerns about the integrity of the electoral process.
