Nairobi Senator Mike Sonko's father, Mzee Gideon Kavanguli, was laid to rest on Tuesday in Mua Hills, Machakos. The burial ceremony drew a large crowd of prominent politicians who attended to pay their respects.
According to the statement, the senator allegedly spent millions of shillings to ensure his father received a decent sendoff. It is claimed that Sonko paid Ksh 5 million for the live coverage of the burial event, which was aired on KTN. The station reportedly charges Ksh 1.2 million per hour for live coverage, excluding a 16% VAT. The burial ceremony was aired for four hours.
The event also saw a number of politicians in attendance, including Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua and his rival Johnstone Muthama, who used the opportunity to engage in a war of words. Additionally, Sonko's late father was buried in a gold and diamond encrusted coffin, which may have cost several millions.
