The Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (CORD) planned a consultative rally at Eldoret’s 64 stadium on Friday, but its status is uncertain. Uasin Gishu Governor Jackson Mandago ordered police to surround the venue and prevent access throughout the weekend.
Mandago, who is a first-time elected politician, may not fully understand the implications of denying CORD a venue in Deputy President William Ruto’s home region.
Ruto has expressed presidential ambitions and is expected to campaign across the country. By restricting access to the rally venue, Mandago may create challenges for his boss. A similar incident occurred in 2007 when Ruto was attacked with arrows at a rally in South Mugirango.
The attempt to restrict Ruto’s movement in Kisii was led by Simeon Nyachae and Ford People. Ruto’s plans to visit other areas, potentially hostile to the Jubilee government, may now face increased scrutiny.
A source in Uasin Gishu claimed that Mandago organized meetings to discourage attendance at the rally, including involving individuals responsible for past violence, such as the 2007 Kiambaa church burning.
Mandago is among several Jubilee governors who have restricted access to their counties, despite significant CORD support in these regions. Uasin Gishu is a cosmopolitan area with diverse communities. Denying thousands of CORD supporters the right to assemble and express their views is unconstitutional and raises concerns about impunity.
