On July 23, 2019, Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Boss George Kinoti confirmed that Deputy President William Ruto had called the DCI Headquarters, claiming his life was in danger due to an alleged assassination plot.
According to Kinoti, Ruto's call prompted the DCI to summon four Cabinet Secretaries - Peter Munya (Trade), Joe Mucheru (ICT), and Sicily Kariuki (Health) - for questioning.
The allegations against the Cabinet Secretaries and their Principal Secretaries were that they were working under instructions from certain operatives in Harambee House and others who ran President Uhuru Kenyatta's past campaigns to block Ruto's chances of succeeding President Uhuru in 2022.
Sources privy to the secret meeting revealed that the group was on an overdrive, increasing its operations to tame the influence of Tanga Tanga MPs in the Mount Kenya region while promoting the handshake between Uhuru and opposition leader Raila Odinga.
The group was also said to be counteracting the perceived threat of President Uhuru losing ground support from his own backyard of Central Kenya.
The meeting was reportedly held at a Nairobi Hotel on Thika Road, where phones were not allowed.
