Published on July 23, 2019, Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has unveiled plans to decongest the city by converting three more streets in the Central Business District into one-way roads.

The streets set to undergo the revamp are Banda Street, Accra Lane, and Gedi Lane, which will be upgraded at a cost of Sh24 million.

As part of the decongestion plan, the three streets will also feature the construction of a pedestrian walkway, installation of lights, and painting of road markings.

Matatus using the three streets will be required to find alternative exit routes out of the CBD, while bicycle lanes and lanes for people with disabilities will be set up on the upgraded streets.

According to Governor Sonko, the decongestion plan will be implemented step by step until law and order is restored in the CBD, creating a conducive business environment for investors and visitors.

County Executive for Roads and Transport, Hitan Majevdia, noted that the three streets have been earmarked due to constant misuse by touts and rogue matatu drivers.

Mr. Majevdia expressed gratitude to partners, including the UN-Habitat, for their support in the decongestion plan.
