CORD Senator, Prof. Peter Anyang Nyong’o, has threatened to take action against a journalist who he claims misquoted him. This alleged misquotation led to an incident where Nyong’o was ejected from Kisumu by individuals associated with Governor Jack Ranguma.
Background ¶
Nyong’o stated that the journalist’s misreporting, which occurred in Nyakach, resulted in him being subjected to hostility from Ranguma’s supporters as he attempted to convene a meeting of the Kisumu County Development Board, as mandated by recently enacted legislation.
Nyong’o also expressed intention to sue the journalist for misrepresenting facts, which allegedly contributed to his altercation with the Kisumu County leadership.
Confrontation ¶
A confrontation ensued when Nyong’o questioned the journalist about the article in question. The journalist acknowledged not having a recording of Nyong’o’s speech in Nyakach but nonetheless quoted him, prompting Nyong’o to threaten legal action or physical harm.
"If you have no clip of my speech, how do you quote me verbally? I will deal with you; I will take you to court if not squeeze the life out of you - I will kill you myself,"
Nyong’o said, according to the account.
Comparison to Similar Incident ¶
This incident bears some resemblance to a previous event involving former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka, who reportedly threatened a journalist due to the journalist’s ethnic affiliation.
